What is a Vanity URL?

A vanity URL uses a readable domain and path so people can recognize, remember, and share an address more easily.

  • Readable Alias
  • Domain Is Separate
  • Availability Required
  • No Outcome Guarantee

A vanity URL is a web address designed to be readable, memorable, and closely connected to the content or campaign it represents. It usually replaces an opaque path such as example.com/a8f92 with a descriptive address such as example.com/summer-guide. The term can describe a readable alias on a standard short domain or a link that also uses an organization's custom domain.

Parts of a Vanity URL

  • Domain: The address before the slash, either a platform domain or a custom domain.
  • Slug or alias: The human-readable path after the domain.
  • Destination: The page opened after the redirect.
  • Campaign context: Optional parameters passed to a compatible destination analytics system.

A vanity URL is not automatically a custom domain. s.id/launch-guide has a readable vanity alias on the s.id domain, while go.example.com/launch-guide combines a custom domain with a readable alias.

Naming Principles

Choose a phrase that remains clear outside the internal campaign plan. Keep it short enough to type, but do not remove so much context that visitors cannot predict the destination. Avoid dates that will become misleading, internal abbreviations, sensitive information, trademark misuse, and words that imply an offer or deadline the destination does not honor.

Before publishing, check capitalization behavior, punctuation support, existing aliases, and whether the address could be misread when spoken aloud. Test the redirect and print a readable fallback URL beside any QR code. Assign an owner when the address will appear on packaging, signage, presentations, or other long-lived materials.

How This Works in s.id

s.id supports custom aliases for short links, subject to availability and current account limits. Connecting an organization's own domain is a separate plan-based capability. Destination changes, analytics retention, and other controls also vary by plan, so a readable alias should not be presented as evidence that every advanced feature is included.

Trust and Measurement

A clear address can improve recognition and reduce ambiguity, but it cannot guarantee clicks, deliverability, safety, search ranking, or conversion. Use link activity to compare documented placements and use destination analytics, CRM, or commerce systems to verify what happened after the redirect.
