What Is CTR (Click-Through Rate)?

CTR measures how often people click after seeing a link, ad, email, or another clickable element.

Click-Through Rate (CTR) is the percentage of impressions that result in a click. Its basic formula is:

CTR = (number of clicks ÷ number of impressions) × 100%

If a link appears 1,000 times and receives 40 clicks, its CTR is 4%. The calculation is meaningful only when clicks and impressions cover the same scope and time period.

Is a Higher CTR Always Better?

There is no single good CTR for every situation. Google explains that a good result depends on what is advertised and the network where it appears. Email, search results, ads, microsite buttons, and organic posts have different attention patterns. Compare a result with the baseline for the same channel, objective, and audience.

CTR also does not prove that someone completed a purchase or registration. Read it together with conversions, traffic quality, time on site, or revenue so optimization does not stop at the click.

Improving CTR Responsibly

  1. Match the headline and CTA to the audience's need
  2. Describe the link destination honestly and specifically
  3. Use a recognizable URL
  4. Place the CTA in a relevant context
  5. Test one variable at a time
  6. Avoid sensational claims that do not match the destination page
