What is a Unique Visitor?

A unique visitor is a tool-specific estimate that deduplicates recorded activity within a defined reporting period.

  • Deduplicated Estimate
  • Defined Time Window
  • Method Varies
  • Not Verified Identity

A unique visitor is an analytics estimate intended to count one visitor once within a defined reporting period. It differs from total visits or clicks, which may include repeated activity from the same browser or device. The word “unique” describes a deduplication rule inside a specific tool; it does not mean the system has verified a person's identity.

How Tools Estimate Uniqueness

Analytics products may use browser cookies, local identifiers, account IDs, device signals, network information, or combinations of available data. Each approach has limits. A person can use multiple devices or browsers, clear storage, block tracking, share a device, change networks, or open a link through software that hides context. Bots and link previews can create additional requests.

Because methods differ, two tools can report different unique-visitor totals for the same campaign without either count being a simple arithmetic error. The reporting window also matters: a visitor counted once per day may be counted again in a monthly report depending on the platform's method.

Unique Visitors, Visits, and Clicks

  • Click or request: An interaction recorded when a link endpoint receives activity.
  • Visit or session: A group of destination activity defined by an analytics tool.
  • Unique visitor: A deduplicated estimate for a stated period.
  • Known user: A person associated with an authenticated account in an authorized system.

These measures answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.

How s.id Fits

s.id may display available visitor and link-activity metrics according to the selected plan and reporting range. Advanced fields, estimated lifetime visitors, retention, and export options have separate entitlements. Treat these values as directional operational data, especially when comparing them with destination analytics that uses another identity method.

Responsible Reporting

Always name the tool, date range, filters, and metric definition. Avoid describing unique visitors as exact people, customers, leads, or buyers. Use consented destination analytics for on-site behavior and use CRM, authentication, form, booking, or commerce records for known outcomes. Privacy controls that reduce measurement are part of the real data environment, not a defect to bypass.
