What Is a Call to Action (CTA)?

A call to action tells an audience what to do next, such as buy, register, contact a business, or download a resource.

A Call to Action (CTA) is a prompt that helps an audience understand the next step. It may be a button, text link, WhatsApp number, QR Code, or closing sentence. Examples include “View the catalog,” “Register for the webinar,” “Download the guide,” and “Buy now.”

Writing a Clear CTA

A useful CTA names the action and, when needed, the result. “View plan prices” provides more context than “Click here.” Its wording, visual treatment, and destination URL must also agree. A button labeled “Download the guide” should not lead to an unrelated sales page that does not explain the promised guide.

Where to Place a CTA

  • In the hero for the primary action
  • After the benefit explanation, once visitors have context
  • On a relevant product or service card
  • At the end of a microsite, article, or event page
  • Near the top of a bio page for the highest-priority destination

Do not fill one screen with many equally prominent actions. Choose one primary action and use secondary ones only when they help. Make buttons large enough, keep labels readable, preserve visible keyboard focus, and tell users when a link opens another app or service.

A click signals interest but is not necessarily a conversion. Also measure whether the visitor completed a purchase, registration, or another important outcome. Microsites and s.id Shop can organize content and CTAs, while short links support distribution and click measurement according to plan capabilities.
